The Importance of AEDs
An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation (VF) and pulseless ventricular tachycardia – also known as heart attacks. AEDs are able to treat these conditions through defibrillation, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm. According to the American Heart Association, survival from cardiac arrest doubles when a bystander uses an AED before emergency responders arrive.
For the safety of athletes and anyone participating in heavy exercise or activity, having an AED in parks, fields and other areas where athletic activities take place is vital. As life-saving as AEDs can be when used effectively, they are unfortunately not typically available in public or community spaces due to their high cost. This is why Play Well – Play Safe has expanded its mission to provide AEDs through our AED Play Safe Project.
